THERE IS NEVER A GOOD TIME FOR AN IRRIGATION PROBLEM

WHAT CAN YOU DO WHEN YOU FIND A LEAK?

Before you turn the water off, take some photos.

and email them to us along with a description of what you see, your name and contact information along with the address of the property.

If you do not know the names of irrigation parts click here.

Possibly turn off the irrigation using a PVB / Backflow.

Some may have a copper colored top instead of a black one like these. Often times we see them located in homes front or the side yards.    Never force knobs and make sure it is only for the irrigation.  If the PVB is broken, leaking or rusted we may be able to replace it.

PVBs sometimes look like this

Sometimes a clock will turn it off.

They work in a similar manner to the ones pictured to the left with handles.

If the leak only shows up when the irrigation is on / running you might be able to turn your irrigation clock to the off position.

Checking for irrigation leaks

If you reach out to multiple landscaping companies

Many landscape maintenance contracts include once a month irrigation checks. If a system is checked today and a leak starts tomorrow; the month of wasted water can be very costly and does not need to continue as there are devices that can send notifications if it thinks there is a leak in nearly real time.

  1. You may want to check if they are properly licensed, like us with a C10 contractors license.
  2. Check reviews on Google and Yelp.

Pricing

Sometimes we can not see what is wrong until we start digging and sometimes we fix one issue and another one may present itself so pricing can change but we do our best to provide a reasonable estimate before we start working.  Don't forget that part of our pricing is the cost of parts, our time which includes getting to and from your property and possibly going to the store to buy parts.

How are leaks detected?

1. Many landscaping maintenance contracts call for irrigation systems to be checked for leaks once a month. If a system is checked today and a leak starts tomorrow it might mean a month goes by before it gets found and fixed.  This can be costly as properties can be paying for the water and possibly fines.

2. Someone notices a leak but how long was it leaking for before it was seen?

Solutions

1. Setting irrigation to come on when there is a chance there is someone looking at the landscaping might allow for quicker detection.

2.  There are devices that detect non-normal water use. When they do; many will send emails and / or text messages out notifying staff so someone can be sent out to assess and fix leaks if they are found.
